Protect the Rights of Family Farmers

“We will work to build a stronger rural and agricultural economy. Democrats will increase funding to support the next generation of farmers and ranchers, with particular attention given to promoting environmentally sustainable agricultural practices. We will encourage programs to protect and enhance family farms, a cherished way of life for millions of Americans.” – Democratic Party platform

Protection from unfair competition for small business owners and family farmers was included in the “Economic Bill of Rights” that President Franklin D. Roosevelt proposed in his 1944 State of the Union Address. In the 74 years since that address family farmers and small business owners have faced increasingly unfair competition from multi-national corporations, driving millions of small business owners and family farmers and ranchers out of business, and reducing profits for those that survive. It is time to make Roosevelt’s vision a reality.

Family farmers and ranchers need an open market and a level playing field. We need to protect the rights of farmers by stopping corporate consolidation and ending foreign farm ownership.
